Lacking established doctrine, commanders like Admiral Norman Scott made precautionary tactical decisions based on perceived vulnerabilities rather than confirmed enemy capabilities. Ultimately, this engagement became a transitional moment for the U.S. Navy, forcing adaptation from pre-war doctrines to modern, radar-centered night combat.
