Original abstract
Engineering graduates pursue a range of careers, including non-traditional occupations. In this research paper, we used narrative inquiry as the methodology to examine the career narratives shared by seven final-year engineering students who completed a finance-related major at a Canadian engineering school—a non-traditional path for engineering students. Their stories shed light on how engineering students navigate their career choices and what factors influence their decisions on early career paths. Career Construction Theory was used to inform analysis and interpretation of the interview data. It was found that factors in the education, workplace and social environments interact with the individual agency to co-construct engineering students’ non-traditional paths; and these non-traditional paths are varied, non-linear, and characterized by distinct identity narratives and adaptability profiles. These findings provide practical implications for engineering students, educators, career counsellors, and employers.
